Under normal cases, cells consume glucose in presence of oxygen. This takes place within mitochondria of the body cells in a process referred to as the Krebs cycle. These protons can only re-enter through the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase enzyme. Passing of the protons through this enzyme leads to the creation of ATP, which is the source of energy for the cells. This process, therefore, ensures a sustainable supply of energy in the body cells.
